FAQ: THE OFFBITS - The Art of Spare Parts
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

What’s the difference between a Starter Kit, Vehicle Extension, and Character Extension? Starter Kits come in nifty little boxes that include everything you need to create one of four OFFBITS characters: ArtBit, BabaBit, CareBit, or InfoBit. Each character has its own personality, design, and color scheme, so it’s really up to you which one you like best! Character Extension packs come as a little bag with extra OFF-bits and pieces in various shapes and colors, designed to enhance and expand your building possibilities with the Starter Kit Vehicle Extension packs are also little bags with extra OFF-bits and pieces, except they come in color schemes matching each of the four OFFBITS characters, and also include WHEELS specially designed to connect with the Starter Kits and allow you to create all kinds of crazy cars and contraptions.

What can be incorporated into an OFFBITS model? Theoretically, Anything! From screws, nuts, bolts and wire lying on the bottom of the toolbox, to discarded everyday bits, pieces and parts. This means that every original OFFBITS model, be it a robot, a vehicle, or an elaborate wacky contraption is essentially like a fingerprint - as unique as the parts that were used and the person who built them. Check out www.theoffbits.com/gallery/ for some inspiration!

Is this a toy? Sure, if you want it to be! We’ve heard everything about the OFFBITS from “The coolest desk prop in the office” to “An awesome platform for my kids to improve their skill set. They can’t put it down” to “The best excuse not to do the dishes” to “My favorite robot buddy!”. In a nutshell - the OFFBITS is an open-source platform, go nuts :-)

Are OFFBITS suitable for kids? With the proper guidance, sure! The OFFBITS make for great parent-child funtime - kids love the colors and characters, and their first time using “adult” tools can be quite an exciting experience. We do our best to smooth any rough edges and use lead-free, industry-approved paints. That being said, the small parts could present a choking hazard for toddlers (under 3), and pre-schoolers (under 7) might not yet have the necessary motor skills to put everything together by themselves.

So which of the OFFBITS Characters are female and which are male? That…is entirely up to you! (or them, of course)

What’s the OFFBITS Creators community?

The OFFBITS Creators community is a work in progress. Essentially it is a social platform where OFFBITS makers can interact, share their original designs, exchange tips, parts and ideas, and immortalize their unique creations. We knew we had a community when more and more OFFBITS owners began sending us pictures and videos of their OFFBITS and the cool things they do with them! We are currently working on creating a comprehensive online platform for the community, with useful tools, games and content that will make it an awesome place to hang out, share, collaborate, and have fun. BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
